Welcome, Broadway Spotted readers, to The Backbone of Broadway! This is Mike Hallinan, writer of Dark Side of Broadway, bringing you a new look at the expansive world of Broadway. Have you ever gone to a performance expecting to see that one STAR you absolutely cannot wait to see, only to have that square piece of paper fall out of your program saying “At this Performance, The Role of Your Favorite Star Will Be Played by Joe Schmo? You’ve probably been slightly bummed out until, lo and behold, said understudy turns out to be amazing! Over time, this understudy may be promoted to the lead role, or spotted by a record producer, or a film director, and given their big break.
These fates have occurred to people such as Sutton Foster, Jeremy Jordan, Matthew Morrison, Cheyenne Jackson, and countless others. There always seem to be the next generation of stars just waiting for their big break. They may have even starred in a show or two, but just haven’t become a household name. Still, they keep on trucking, taking any role possible to pay the bills. They also can be found in the community, participating in events ranging from showcases of up and comers, to softball games in Central Park.
These are the performers we wish to highlight. As I’m sure we know, Broadway is filled with talent that are only really highlighted in the circumstances mentioned above. In the columns to follow, we will have conversations with such people, tracing their beginnings to the projects that have led them to the Great White Way and that they continue to pursue. Is there someone you have always wanted to learn more about? Mention them in the Comments section below and we will see what we can do. Join us next week for our first Backbone of Broadway showcase as we interview an ensemble member currently appearing in a long running Broadway show, as well as participating in a storied festival of upcoming works that make it to the stage.
