Broadway Secret Santa!

by BwaySpotted

It’s December and that can mean only one thing for BroadwaySpotted…

THE THIRD ANNUAL BROADWAY SECRET SANTA!

If you’re new to BroadwaySpotted and this is your first look at our Secret Santa, let me break it down for you. A few years ago, I got to thinking about the holiday season and how so many of our fans live all around the country and even THE WORLD. I thought about the time when I was in high school, far away from Broadway, unable to find many people who liked the same things I did. I know I wanted to get cast albums and merch for Christmas, but instead I got, well…normal presents.  Don’t get me wrong, I was grateful, I always am! But I also know how nice it is to unwrap a present and have it be the program from your favorite show of the year. It lights up your life.

Thus, the Broadway Secret Santa was born. We take information from anyone who wants to participate (if you are under 18, we do need a permission slip from your parents to approve giving your address to whoever becomes your secret santa. This is non-negotiable), such as their favorite shows, favorite performers, as well as where they live and if they would like to celebrate via mail, email or both.

Why do we offer both? Simple. Some people want to participate full out—get packages and cards in the mail, the whole sh-bang! Some don’t feel comfortable giving out their address and would prefer only to get electronic gifts like e-cards and itunes songs or fun tweets. You can opt for JUST social media/email, or you can opt for mail which would include snail mail, social media and email. Does this make sense? If not, feel free to ask questions below.

In the past, Broadway Secret Santa has been wildly popular. People have made friends that they keep in touch with to this day and I’ll tell you what—we’ve actually had Broadway performers participate! It’s true. I didn’t tell anyone that they were participating, because I didn’t want to give them away, but soooomeone out there got gifts from a Broadway performer or two. In addition to that, I participate every year. So one lucky fan is getting gifts from me. I promise to give the best gifts ever! I’ve got sooo much Broadway merch laying around, I’m sure I have something for everyone.

If you agree to participate via email only, you MUST send notes to your secret santa a minimum of once a week until Christmas day. You must also send at least one electronic gift worth a minimum of $5. That can be amazon credit, you can choose a specific Broadway song off of iTunes, whatever you want. But this is required.

If you choose to participate via mail, you MUST send notes via email at least once between December 5th and Christmas day. You must send at least TWO notes via snail mail (either a letter, or Christmas card, or anything!). Third, you must send at least ONE small gift (can be hand made, free, whatever) and one larger gift of at least $10.  Feel free to go above and beyond! Many people send notes more often, some even go to stage doors and get signatures and videos from their person’s favorite performers. How cute is that? Everyone loves a video message, and it’s free!

Don’t forget YOU MUST STAY ANONYMOUS UNTIL YOUR VERY LAST NOTE/GIFT which should arrive on or close to Christmas day. This is what makes it a fun “Secret.”

We try to hook people up with people further away from them to connect the Broadway community coast to coast, HOWEVER if you want to make friends in your area that love Broadway, just let me know and I will do my best to find someone close to you that you can go to regional or NYC shows with.

Disclaimer: I obviously want EVERYONE who signs up to participate, but I cannot control what happens in the mail. Unfortunately, last year, we did have a few packages arrive late, much after Christmas. Some packages were returned because addresses were put on wrong and a small number or people just…disappeared. Is this sad? Yes. Is there anything I can do about it? No. Please realize that 98% of things go perfectly, but because this is a free service and I am using my non-work hours to go through every entry and hook you up with people that seem like good matches, I cannot do anything other than get you a new person if one disappears. Don’t be mad L

Okay, that’s all done. Now, how do you get involved? Simple! Just fill out the form below and wait for me to email you with the information of your Secret Santa Recipient. You’re getting notes and gifts, so please give back! We will take entries until December 4th, 2012. I will match you up a day or two after that.

I love this idea! Few questions though. If I participate via snail mail, what kind of stuff should be in the notes I send? Should it be Broadway-related like what kind of stuff we like or about us? Also, what qualifies as a small gift? Can’t wait!

    • BwaySpotted says:

      Hi Aaron,

The notes can be anything you want. I wrote little things about Broadway in mine, but everyone is different. A poem, a note wishing them a good day–anything!

Small gift…show magnet? A signed playbill? Something of that nature.

  2. Bernadette says:

I’m doing this, if only for the cover image!! Brilliant!

  3. Jenn says:

When you say favorite Broadway performers, is that of all time or just performers who are currently in shows? I also assume that favorite shows not playing means of all time, as well?

    • BwaySpotted says:

Performers could be either (or both). Obviously, if they’re currently working, it might be easier for your santa to get you something related to them.

Shows definitely means of all time! :)

  7. Alan says:

I am not sure my participant form came through? I filled it out on my iphone.

  8. Sydney says:

I submitted a form the other day, but I did it at a bad time and was really rushed. I am submitting a 2nd more detailed one now. I will somehow note that on the form, ok? Don’t want to confuse things!

  9. Abby says:
