Big hair, leather, and rock ‘n roll. That is what one can expect at The Canal Room on Saturday nights. This popular venue has taken the 1980s to a whole new level by creating BACK TO THE 80S, a show that brings the audience back to a time of Journey, Guns ‘n Roses, White Snake, and many more killer groups. Jesse’s Girl, the band consisting of seven members, leads the show performing all the audience favorites. But starting September 21st, they are bringing in a special guest for a six-week stint to celebrate The Canal Room’s 10th anniversary. It’s the man who brings the rock ‘n roll to the Great White Way- Constantine Maroulis!
We got the chance to interview Constantine on this awesome opportunity and to talk about his upcoming hopes for getting back in a theatre. He told us that he knew Marcus, who owns The Canal Room and is one of the producers for the show. They met when Constantine performed with the Rock of Ages cast at Miley Cyrus’ birthday party a few years back. Marcus and Constantine discussed Back to the 80s and the possibility of making the strongest and best lineup possible. Constantine admitted that since he was “in between projects right now,” this opportunity to enhance the show came at the perfect time. They know that younger crowds enjoy the 80s music just as much as the older crowd of those in their 30s, 40s, and 50s, so for the time that Constantine joins the group, they are adding in an earlier show. Just another way they found to build the on their former ideas.
When asked about the songs that he is most excited to sing, he couldn’t think of just one. Constantine told us about an acoustic medley that he and a member of Jesse’s Girl, Eric, have created. He explained, “since so many of the songs in that time use pretty much the same three chords, there are similar sounding songs.” Which they figured would make an exciting mix up. He also said that everyone in the band gets their moment, which really enhances the story telling aspect of the show that they are trying to bring out. Constantine did let us know that there will not be any songs from The Wedding Singer, the show in which he made his Broadway debut in 2006, but the audience can expect to hear a song or two from Rock of Ages. He also mentioned that there may even be some from Jersey Boys!
Constantine was quick to tell us that the members of Jesse’s Girl are “great professionals.” He said that they can “literally play anything” and it has been awesome working with “real New Yorkers.” He even talked a bit about working on the side with a few of them, writing new material, and collaborating on possible future projects. We then asked about Constantine’s 80s influences and how they’ve affected him as he has formed his career. The two names that he threw out as “the easy answer” were Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen, but then he went on to explain his love for the new wave music that came out when he was growing up. He called this music “dark, poetic pop” and referenced ‘Right Round’ by Dead or Alive. This influence came from being an “MTV kid” which was “unreal” back then. He told us that these are just a few of many songs, and artists that have molded his sound.
As much as we love Constantine the rock star, we wouldn’t be BroadwaySpotted if we didn’t love Constantine the Broadway star. We couldn’t wait to find out what he could tell us about a possible return to the stages here in New York. Constantine admitted that he loves being on stage and is excited to get back but he explained that he has been doing eight-show weeks for five years and is currently taking a break to see family, rest, and even get back to writing and recording new music. He told us that he is back in the studio with original music and he’s collaborating with some exciting people. Though, he did let us in on his wish to bring Toxic Avenger to Broadway at some point in the near future. He told us that coming from Houston, there have been some great changes to it, but it’s all about timing in this business. When told how much his fans would love to have him back in a Broadway show and he laughed and said that he loved getting to see them and meet them after shows at the stage door. He also mentioned how much he loved when fans came to show to see him and experienced other artists in the process. The fact that they would walk away from the show loving his performance, but then found another performer to follow as well was awesome.
He admits that his fans have been amazing and that he’s also “lucky to have a great family” that has influenced and supported him. “Do what’s inside of your heart and hope that the fans dig it,” has always been his out look on the entertainment industry. The good news is, it’s worked out for him so far, and in turn for us!
As far as the Back to the 80s event goes, Constantine said that he hopes that the audience has an “awesome, awesome time” at either the early or late show. The whole show is in concert form. It’s affordable, great, live, pure rock music and it’s a “celebration of awesome music.” Closing out the interview, Constantine assured us that he and Jesse’s Girl are going to “crank it up pretty good.”
